Nature in the City

In the UK, 85% of us now live in cities. And 70% of the surface area of these is ‘Grey’ and not ‘Green’.

As we push to build 1.5 million homes, where does this leave our greenspaces? Is the Government’s relentless focus on economic growth at loggerheads with our climate? Or can nature & our economy grow hand-in-hand?

In Bristol, the projected housing need over the next 10 years is 33,755 homes, with Brabazon & Bristol Temple Quarter leading the charge. But where will that leave nature, our climate crisis and public health?

Pollution already causes up to 50,000 deaths in the UK each year, and raising temperatures will soon blight our cities. How do we stitch nature back into cities alongside development?

There’s an appetite for green in Bristol. We have our first Green MP, and the allotment waiting list is the longest in the country. But with a shortage of funding, and a reluctance to pay for ongoing maintenance. What can we do to provide quality green spaces for health, biodiversity and our planet?

Join us for a discussion navigating the challenges and opportunities of urban green spaces in Bristol. We’ll seek to answer: is it really Green vs Growth? Or can we find a more sustainable solution to developing our city?

6 O’Clock Sessions:

Imagine a place where public, politicians and professionals come together to debate the future of our cities. The 6 O’Clock Sessions are home to informed civic debate – topical discussion with a twist. These sessions are participatory in nature – different opinions are welcome, heard and respectfully challenged. Just the tonic for our polarised times. Everyone welcome.
