Portraits of Bristol’s Past

Acclaimed photographer Jem Southam will narrate a personal pictorial journey through the late 1970s and early 1980s when he captured the last days of the city docks.

His black and white photographic chronicles of what was once the beating commercial heart of Bristol launched a distinguished artistic and academic career.  At the time Southam was the photographic assistant at the Arnolfini. He is now one of the country’s leading landscape photographers.

Jem will explain how his own family history was tied to the port and how at weekends he would take his large format camera around the docks that had been left abandoned before the redevelopment that began later in the 1980s.

Our talks are open to the public and professionals alike.
The event takes place at The Assembly, Design West, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol, BS1 4QA
