It’s Everybody’s Business
Imagine a city designed for dignity, where toilets are accessible and available to all.
Now imagine how that might look in Bristol…
What’s all the flush about?
Over the past 15 years Local Authority spending on Public Toilets has halved, with over 1000 shut across the country and 1 in 5 people reporting fear of leaving their home and being caught short.
With toilets currently central to the culture wars, they have become an unlikely hot topic for debate. Can we design a solution to this mass public inconvenience?
We lift the lid on a conversation to improve our ailing public toilets. Join the discussion on the design, accessibility and maintenance of toilets in Bristol. What should they look like? Where should they be? Who should pay?
In Japan & Norway it’s a matter of civic pride, with top architects vying to design their lavs. Does the UK cistern need to change?
Bring your ideas, experiences and solutions to the debate.
“With no legal requirement for local authorities to provide toilets, our once extensive network of civic lavatories has been abandoned, sold or turned into novelty bars, leaving gaping holes in basic sanitary provision” – Architect Alberte Lauridsen, The Guardian

The 6 O’Clock Sessions are home to informed civic debate – topical discussion with a twist. These sessions are participatory in nature – different opinions are welcome, heard and respectfully challenged. Just the tonic for our polarised times. Everyone welcome.
