About the course
Explore the wonders of European Art, from the ethereal Romantic landscapes of Turner to the mind-landscapes of Edvard Munch.
Whether you’re looking to rediscover your love of the old masters, want to use the course to inspire your practice, or simply to broaden your art history knowledge, this 6-week course takes you on an exciting journey through the history of European art, from Delacroix’s exotic Orientalising fantasies, the miniature accuracy of Pre-Raphaelite literary and Biblical narratives, to the moment when Cezanne’s still life starts to dissolve the bounds of illusionistic perspective.
Led by celebrated buildings historian & social historian Andrew Foyle, this course is the second in his History of Art series and will take you through the timeline of European Art from 1800-1900.
6 Week Timeline
- Romanticism – including Delacroix, Gericault, Turner
- Naturalism into Realism – including Constable, Corot, Courbet, Manet
- Pre-Raphaelites – including Rosetti, Millais, Burne Jones
- Impressionism – including Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassat
- Post-Impressionism – including Seurat, Van Gogh, Cezanne
- Aestheticism and Symbolism – including Whistler, Toulouse Lautrec, Munch, Klimt
As well as being inspired, you will also leave with a strong understanding of European Art from the Romantic Movement to the Edwardian Era, and will be able to recognise the distinctive styles of the key players in each movement.
