About the course

This 6 week course, open to all who are interested in their urban environment, aims to introduce the issues, concepts and actions which contribute to the shaping of our built environment.

It illustrates the roles of the many professions and bodies involved and how citizens/residents can participate in the process of designing and caring for our urban surroundings.

Through assessing schemes, site visits and case studies, we will delve into what makes up a city’s character. We will learn to identify the things we value in our neighbourhood.

Covering/Including: An overview of the planning system, the language of urban design, what is urban design & who does it? (and who is often left out), (history of) The High street, the public realm (how do we design the space between buildings?), quiet areas, green areas, preservation to conservation and where to draw the line.
