About the course

Explore the wonders of European Art, from Italy’s Renaissance to Georgian England.

Whether you’re looking to rediscover your love of the old masters, want to use the course to inspire your practice, or simply to broaden your art history knowledge, this 6-week course takes you on an exciting journey through the history of European art, from early renaissance and the classical realism of Botticelli, through to Vermeer’s mastery of light, and the romantic naturalistic vision of Thomas Gainsborough.

Led by celebrated buildings historian & social historian Andrew Foyle, this course is the first in his History of Art series and will take you through the timeline of European Art from 1400-1800.

6 Week Timeline

  • Early Renaissance Brunelleschi, Uccello, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna, Botticelli, Van Eyck
  • High Renaissance & Venice Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Veronese
  • Baroque Cortona, Carravaggio, Gentileschi, Velasquez, Rubens, Van Dyck
  • The Dutch Golden Age Rembrandt, Vermeer, de Hooch, Hals, Steen
  • Rococo Watteau, Fragonard, Boucher, Lely, Kneller, Hogarth
  • England & The Grand Tour – Gainsborough, Reynolds, Ramsay, Canaletto, Romney, Stubbs

As well as being inspired, you will also leave with a strong understanding of European Art from the Renaissance to the Age of Elegance, and will be able to recognise the distinctive styles of the key players in each movement.
